I made new tag! UGLY TRUTH. Actually, I’m still debating whether to put in RAMBLING of The Night or General entry, but, since I’m working on this entry in the daytime, I decide to make a new tag. So, this “Slave Contract” is going to be my first entry for UGLY TRUTH.
Actually, I want to write about KRISS lawsuit against SM Entertainment but before I go further may be I should make some “intro” or “epilogue” first. Term of Slave Contract is not new in Kpop industry. Why they call slave contract? Because the contract can be look as unacceptable for the star. The star is signed to the company for a number of years. The example that we can look is on Yoona from Girl’s Genaration’s contract which up to 13 years!

The contract also contains long hours of training. The training includes all round of training such as dancing, singing, acting even language class. Idol group Infinite had told that they practice their dancing for 8 hours every day if they didn’t have any comeback, the practice can be up to 12 hours if they have their comeback. This 8 to 12 hours of practice not including their other practice, such as vocal practice or acting class and also their individual or group schedule such as tv appearance or any other showcase. So, most of the stars will always be in tired state due to lack of sleep.
The star also forbids in being in a relationship. In other words the company also taking control in star private life. I don’t remember which artist, but she said that she cannot dating with anyone in 3 years after debut. It can be accepted for ‘cannot dating’ clause because it’s for the artist own good. The star also cannot meet their friends and family since they already to much schedule, it's kind of impossible to socialize. The star also said that their private phone had been taken to make sure they concentrate on their practice. This star also undergoes strict diet and need to maintain their body.
May be people will think, why they still signed the contract if they know they will suffer? May be they still young when they need to sign the contract, but they still have their parents or guidance that can go through the contract, then why still signed it? In other words, just the one that really determines to be an IDOL will sign it.
An idol made by sweats, tears and blood, just the one that really determines can debut as an IDOL. The dream to be an Idol make they willing to sign the contract. It’s actually become the slave contract when what they get is not worth it for what they done. This happened in TVXQ or DBSK case where 3 out of 5 of the members (Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu) file a lawsuit on their agency SM Entertainment. They claim on unfair contract for incorrect profit distribution. TVXQ had a 13 year contract with SM Entertainment. It is a 13 year contract in reality it is a lifetime contract. With the exclusive right clause in the contract, the 13 years also include the time the members are serving their military service, hence it will go more than 15 years. TVXQ’s member just only received only 0.5% increase salary in the past 5 years they bring with SM despite their amazing success and huge fanbase. SM had been taking 70%-80% of the profit that TVQX makes and leaving just 10-20% of the members themselves. Beside that, they also really tired due to tight schedule that the company put up unilaterally.

Actually there a lot of things that can be discussed in TVXQ case, but may be in another entry since I just want to give some example about slave contract. Other examples we can see in Super Junior’s Hangeng case and KARA lawsuit against DSP. I will not discuss about Hangeng case here since I’m going to write in another entry which I would like to compare between Hangeng and Kriss or Wu Yifan case. Ok, that's all for this entry. Enjoy reading.
